Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park

Established as a marine national park in 1980, Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is an archipelago of 42 islands covering 102 km², located off the coast of Surat Thani Province, east of Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. The park is registered as a Ramsar site by the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty recognizing important wetlands. Many refer to the islands as « Angthong, » which is incorrect. The correct spelling is « Ang Thong, » meaning « golden basin. »

The islands cover 18 km² of the park, with the main ones being Ko Phaluai, Ko Wua Ta Lap, Ko Mae Ko, Ko Sam Sao, Ko Hin Dap, Ko Nai Phut, and Ko Phai Luak. The highest peak is on Ko Phaluai at 396 meters. The islands are mostly rugged limestone hills, with cliffs, caves, and inner sea lakes. There is a nomadic village on Ko Wua Ta Lap and another on Ko Phaluai, while the other islands are uninhabited.

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

The Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) is a popular attraction. It is located on a very small island of Koh Faan, connected to the mainland by a small causeway. The main attraction of this temple is the magnificent 12-meter-high seated Buddha statue, which can be seen from various points across Koh Samui. The temple offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area and provides visitors with a sense of calm and spiritual experience.

The Big Buddha Temple dates back to the 1970s, when it was built to honor Buddha. The construction of the temple and its iconic Big Buddha statue was entirely funded by donations from locals and visitors. Over the years, the temple has become a popular tourist destination as well as an important religious site for locals.

Na Muang Waterfall

The Na Muang Waterfalls, a majestic set of two waterfalls on Koh Samui, show that the island’s beauty extends beyond its beaches. Located about 12 km inland from Nathon Bay, the Na Muang waterfalls are accessible via a walking path from the park entrance.

The first waterfall, Na Muang 1, cascades into a lovely natural pool, offering a welcome refreshment on a hot day. About a 30-minute uphill walk away is Na Muang 2, smaller but just as appealing.

Samui Elephant Sanctuary

At Samui Elephant Sanctuary, the focus is on creating a safe haven for elephants who have been exploited in the past for activities such as logging, street begging, or performing in shows. The sanctuary provides a retirement home where these majestic animals can live out the rest of their lives in peace and dignity.
